Battle your creature: arena, tournaments and player challenges

By LiveGotchi TeamPublished on 4 min readFrançais

A LiveGotchi creature battles in the arena of the Battle page: in training, in ranked competition, in a knockout tournament, or in a challenge sent to a specific player. The battle is played with no random draw at all, from its stats and its form on stream, and it can be shown on the OBS overlay, in front of your chat.

What decides a battle

  • Four stats: health, strength, precision and mana. Health gives hit points, strength the damage of blows, mana the damage of spells, and precision the accuracy against the opponent.
  • Form of the day. Each stat is weighted by the state of the same name, the one your stream feeds. A creature well looked after during your streams fights better; a creature in poor health on stream is in poor health in the arena too.
  • Level, from 1 to 50. Each level gained gives a point to put into one of the four stats.
  • Tactics: a list of one to six actions, blow or spell, played in a loop.
  • No luck involved. No critical hit, no random dodge: the same battle, replayed, gives the same result.

A battle lasts twenty-four turns at most. A creature at zero hit points is knocked out and the battle stops; when the turns run out, the one that kept the largest share of its hit points wins.

Four ways to battle

Training

The queue pairs your creature with one from another account, at most five levels apart, in order of arrival. So you never wait alone, a training dummy fights right away. Training gives no experience: it is for trying out a tactic.

Ranked competition

Each fighter pays an entry fee in credits when the battle starts. The winner receives a share of the pot as earned credits, and the ranking moves: every creature starts at 1000 points, and gains or loses some depending on the expected result against its opponent. A draw gives each fighter their entry fee back. A defeat costs the entry fee and ranking points, never the creature or its progress.

Knockout tournaments

A tournament has its frequency, its level range, its entry fee per creature and its rewards as shares of the pot. You can enter one or more creatures. When registration closes, the bracket is built in order of registration, with no draw; each round is played at its set time, and the match is shown on both players' overlays. With fewer than two entrants, the tournament is cancelled and fees are refunded.

Challenges

A challenge targets a specific player, with the stakes written in the invitation: the challenged player knows what is at risk before answering, and picks their creature when accepting. They have one day to do so.

  • Friendly: nothing at stake, no credits, no ranking, no experience.
  • Ranked: the rules of ranked competition, entry fee and ranking included.
  • To the death: the defeated creature fades away. It starts again from its egg and the copy stays in the collection: progress is lost, never the egg you bought. It is the only battle where a creature can be lost, and only because both players accepted it.

The battle on screen

  • If battle display is turned on in the Stream page, every battle played is shown on the overlay. When several arrive at once, they play one after the other, with the rest time you set.
  • During a battle, health is shown in red, strength in yellow and mana in blue.
  • The animations are the ones the egg's creator drew: attack, spell, up to three ways of being hit, knockout. The egg's powers — projectile, impact, aura, camera move — fire at the right moment of the attack.
  • Every battle is recorded and can be replayed from the Battle page, overlay included.

Creators who want to prepare these animations will find everything in the Creation method (in French).

Sending your creature into the arena, step by step

  1. Hatch an egg during your stream: a creature still in its egg does not fight.
  2. Feed its states during your streams: they make its form of the day.
  3. Open the Battle page, pick the creature and set its tactics.
  4. Choose training, ranked competition, a tournament or a challenge.
  5. After a battle, give it five minutes of recovery before the next one.

Frequently asked questions

Can my creature die in battle?

Only in a challenge to the death, accepted by both players: the defeated creature fades away and starts again from its egg, and the copy stays in the collection. Everywhere else, a knockout ends the battle, and a defeat never costs the creature or its progress.

Is there any luck in battles?

No. Damage comes from stats and form of the day, and tournament order comes from registration order. The same battle, replayed, always gives the same result.

Does training level my creature up?

No. Battle experience is earned in ranked competition and in tournaments. Training and friendly challenges give nothing.

Can my chat watch the battles?

Yes, if battle display is turned on in the Stream page: battles play on the OBS overlay, and tournament matches are shown on both players' overlays.
